Devil Roosters?

August 10, 2007 at 2:42 pm (Pablum)

For reasons I don’t want to go into at this time I was searching for chicken clucking sounds. Quickly enough I found just what I was looking for. The same site had a link to rooster sounds. I figure why not? We learn from age 1 that roosters go cock-a-doodle-do, right? Wrong.

Remove the cock-a-doodle-do of childhood from your mind and really listen to a rooster. It is creepy as hell.

Given to fly

May 18, 2006 at 10:38 pm (Pablum)

He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree
The wind rose up, set him down on his knee

A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw
Delivered him wings, “Hey, look at me now”
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor
Oh, power, oh

I’m not a huge Pearl Jam fan, but this song strikes a chord in me that I can’t explain, especially when it hits the above section.

Haven’t listened to Yield in years so I popped it in the CD player tonight and had forgotten how much I like this album, uh, CD. Great music to accompany me in my task of converting my thousand plus RAW nikon images to jpg. I think this is a teaser for my stint in Hell.

RAW compromise

May 6, 2006 at 9:37 pm (Pablum)

One of my biggest concerns with my RAW images is the fact that I want to start printing large versions of some of them for artwork around the house (or as gifts to family). RAW lets me create wickedly large TIFF files that are good for this.

I think it is safe to say that not all my RAW images are hang-worthy, so I’m going to go through and only keep the really good RAW files, convert and save the rest.

Sigh, RAW vs. JPG round 2

May 6, 2006 at 9:11 pm (Pablum)

I can’t get away from this. I had switched to jpgs for a week or so and went right back to RAW.

I am right back on the verge of going back to all jpg. I took about 150 jpg shots today and I everything went well.

Temple of the King

April 8, 2006 at 11:53 pm (Pablum)

When I first sat down here this evening to reorganize this blog, I rummaged through my paltry CD collection and found one I hadn’t listened to in quite some time.

rbrainbow.jpg

I love Rainbow, but I am more inclined to have Rainbow Rising or Long Live Rock and Roll in the car. What prompted me to post this, however, was the song “The Temple of the King.” In the early 1980s, as I sat at my Commodore 64 for hours on end, this was one of the album’s I used to put on repeat (yes, record players could repeat without intervention!).

Nostalgia probably has the most to do with this, but it remains one my all-time favorite songs. The entire album is great, but this song in particular has latched on to my psyche and won’t let go.

RAW vs. jpg

March 31, 2006 at 9:03 pm (Pablum)

I am staring at a large fork in my road and it has many tines.

I have a Nikon D70s. I am about as far from a professional as you can get and still take an occasional picture that doesn’t make the average person vomit. I became hooked on the whole NEF concept. Nikon Capture and the whole shebang. Looking back on this, I believe I may have been wasting time and space.

D70s

I have taken a lot of pictures in RAW mode and for the longest time I thought this was the mode for me. Especially after buying the $100 Nikon Capture 4 and everything it allowed me to do. Now, 12 Gigs of pictures later, I’m not so sure. For cataloging the NEFs I have to use Nikon’s PictureProject and I don’t like it.

I think I need to realize that all I want to do is take pictures, print pictures, and see them on the computer. Adding the whole RAW thing in there is just throwing an impediment in my way. I think I’m going to start taking jpgs now and convert all my RAWs to jpg and just be done with it.

Easy to say and tougher to do.

**UPDATE**
I’m in the middle of deleting all my NEF files (Nikon’s RAW format) and saving them as jpgs. I really think this is better in the long run. The size difference is huge too; the jpgs are about 1/4 the size.

Weekly Book Binge

February 22, 2006 at 5:25 pm (Pablum)

Stopped at Border’s last night. I finally completed my hardcover collection of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. During the lean times of the 1990’s, I had resorted to paperback versions. Now that the 11th volume is out, I thought about revisiting the saga from the start but wasn’t looking forward to the first 3 books being tiny flimsy paperbacks. I may even start a Wheel of Time wiki so I can keep all the people, places, and events straight; may be a fun excercise.

I also purchased Cell by Stephen King. I’m half way through The Stand and am really enjoying it. When I saw the 30% off sticker on the book, I couldn’t pass it up.

My bargain purchase for the week was another cocktail book (this one contains a lot more than the last). If we ever host a party, I want to be able to at least be a somewhat decent host.

Crossword Puzzle maker

February 3, 2006 at 10:12 pm (Pablum)

If you’ve ever wanted to create your own crossword puzzles, this is the best program for the job.

Crossword Compiler

I have (more like had) a really old version that was really spiffy at that time (late 1990s) and it looks to have matured quite a bit.

The Stand (The Complete and Uncut Edition)

I took the free shipping offer from Amazon thinking it wouldn’t matter; I could wait. Hell, I have pleny of other stuff to read… Every day after the purchase I was checking the order page to see when it was shipping.

I am so impatient.
